ChatGPT’s ‹ 1/2 › arrows are missing. How to go back to a previous version
You edit a message or regenerate an answer, and the little ‹ 1/2 › that let you flip back isn’t there. You’re not imagining it, and you’re far from alone.
What the arrows were for
Every time you edited a message or regenerated an answer, ChatGPT kept both and put ‹ 1/2 › under it. Click ‹ and the earlier version came back, with everything that followed it. Type, and the chat carried on from the version on screen.
That small control did a lot of work. Writers drafted and redrafted a scene. Students asked the same question two ways. Anyone could regenerate an answer three times and keep the best one, not just the last.
How they disappeared
Not all at once. In February 2026 people on the OpenAI community forum started reporting that the arrows were gone from edited messages. In March some paying subscribers lost them on every device, while a fresh free account still had them. In August they began vanishing on reload: versions made a minute earlier were out of reach after a refresh. At the end of August ChatGPT on the web replaced them with a See versions button.
See versions opens a window where you can read the old versions, but not bring one back. To carry on from an older version, ChatGPT offers one thing: Branch in new chat, which copies the conversation into a separate chat.
OpenAI’s reply on the forum in September: “We’ll pass along the request to keep alternate versions inside one conversation and make the navigation optional. We don’t have a timeline to share.”
What people lost
The better draft
The arrows were a way to compare. Try a few versions, flip through them, go on from the best one. Now the newest version wins, whether it’s better or not.
What if my new iteration is not better than the one two before? … Why can’t I just make the previous one the one I want to work with, like with the arrows?
One chat, many branches
One person on the forum described talking through a 20-chapter book: introduce the book, discuss chapter 1, then edit the first message to move on to chapter 2. Twenty branches in one tidy chat, and you could jump between chapters at will.
You either have to keep everything in one increasingly long chat or potentially end up with as many as 20 different chats, one for each chapter you return to discussing.
A new chat for every detour
Branch in new chat does let you continue an old version, but every small detour becomes another chat in the sidebar, and the original chat stays stuck on its latest version.
I do not want to create a separate branch every time I want to continue from an older response.
Temporary chats
In a temporary chat there is no See versions at all. Edit a message there and the earlier version is simply out of reach.
The version feature is completely gone from temporary chats. This means that you can no longer evaluate different prompts or responses and then continue from the version you prefer.
Going back to a previous response
Regenerated answers kept their own pair of arrows, Previous response and Next response. But they come and go: in some chats they never show, and after a reload they can be gone.
I’m constantly regenerating replies to get them right, and now that the arrows are gone, I can’t even get back to my earlier drafts.
No undo
ChatGPT has no Undo button. The only way to roll a chat back is to edit an earlier message, and once you do, the path you left behind can be read in See versions but never returned to.
What people try instead
The forum threads are full of workarounds: searching chats for words from the lost version, downloading the whole data export to dig a branch out of it, reading the page’s code, adding a parameter to the chat’s address. Some of them work for a while, until the next reload or the next update. None gives the arrows back.
The fix: the arrows, back where they were
We made Branch Switcher for ChatGPT to put them back. ‹ 1/2 › appears again under edited messages and regenerated answers, and works the way it used to.
- Press ‹ and the earlier version comes back with its answers, right in this chat.
- Keep typing and your message continues the version on screen. No new chat.
- Click the counter for every version in a list, with its first words.
- Come back to a version and you land on the branch you left there.
- Temporary chats and projects too.
To Anna and Tom: may every trail you take together end with a view worth the climb.
Your chats never reach us. Everything is free for the first 3 days, then Pro is $2.99 a month or $12.99 a year.
Questions
Did ChatGPT delete my old versions?
No. They are still in your chats. ChatGPT only took away the arrows that switched between them.
Will OpenAI bring the arrows back?
OpenAI says it has passed the request on, with no timeline. Asking for the arrows back is one of the most-liked requests on its community forum.
Isn’t “Branch in new chat” the same thing?
No. The arrows switched versions inside one chat. Branch in new chat makes a separate chat from the point you pick, and the original stays on its latest version.
Does the extension work in the ChatGPT app or on a phone?
No. It runs in Chrome on a computer, at chatgpt.com. The ChatGPT desktop and phone apps can’t run browser extensions.
Is this made by OpenAI?
No. This page and Branch Switcher for ChatGPT are made by etcetera, an independent developer, not affiliated with OpenAI. ChatGPT is a trademark of OpenAI.
